In addition to our staffs' superb qualifications in hands-on dementia care, our leadership team continues to take active roles as educators in the community to further Alzheimer's related awareness.
Char Hu, PhD, Director
Char recently completed his Doctoral thesis at Baylor College of Medicine where he performed basic research into the underlying mechanisms for diseases such as Alzheimer's. He utilized high-performance computing in order to shed light on the biophysical motivation behind protein folding. He is responsible for six peer-reviewed publications in widely circulated scientific journals, including one book chapter. He was recently invited to give lectures at the President's Meeting of the International Society of Quantum Biology and Pharmacology in Cetraro, Italy and the College of Pharmacy at the University of Baltimore.
Jane Lowrance, Assistant Director
Jane Lowrance, as a member of the Georgetown Living management team, brings a wide array of Alzheimer's care expertise to our community. She is a very compassionate person who is entirely dedicated to dementia care. She was the personal caregiver for a family member with dementia for 9 years and learned first hand many of the struggles that family caregivers go through. This experience, along with skills obtained from being the proprietor of a successful family business, lead her into the dementia care industry. Jane understands Alzheimer's care from both the family member side as well as from the service oriented business side. This gives her keen insights for assisting families facing tough decisions related to dementia care. Jane is a duel citizen of the U.S. and France, loves cooking and enjoys spending time with her husband and two children.
DeeDee Hu, Pharm. D, NCCDP Board Member
Dr. Hu is an active staff member at Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center, Houston, Texas. Her specialty includes that of critical care medicine, cardiology and infectious disease services. She is an associate clinical faculty member at the University of Houston College of Pharmacy, and is an active preceptor of pharmacy student interns and Memorial Hermann residents. Dr. Hu’s current research portfolio includes the perioperative management of cardiovascular surgery patients, Human Immunodeficiency Virus/ Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (HIV/AIDS) therapy in underdeveloped countries, and the usage of vitamin supplementation in conjuction with anti-parasitic therapy for children in third world countries. Dr. Hu serves on the board of directors at the National Council of Certified Dementia Practitioners (NCCDP).
James Mancuso, Ph.D
James received his PhD in biomedical science from Baylor College of Medicine and is currently researching neurogenesis, the naturally occurring birth of new neurons, in the adult brain at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School. Research into neurogenesis and how it changes with age is giving us new clues into how Alzheimer's disease begins and progresses and in the long term offers to yield a path to reverse the devastating effects of the disease. James is an active member in the society for neuroscience, the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the Alzheimer's Disease Association of Singapore.
Bee Bartell, Pharm.D, RPh
Dr. Bartell received her Doctorate of Pharmacy from the University of Texas at Austin. She then decided to expand her pharmaceutical knowledge to encompass more direct patient care and therefore focused on the more clinical aspects of pharmacy. In aspiring to achieve this, she completed her General Practice Residency at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, MA, and continued to enhance her clinical knowledge by specializing in Critical Care during completion of her second residency at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital in the Houston, Texas Medical Center. She currently remains at St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital as the Clinical Coordinator for Critical Care/Nutrition Support for the Department of Pharmacy. Having a strong understanding of the impact nutrition has on the wellbeing of the human body, she is very passionate about managing and educating others on the appropriate nutrition goals and requirements each individual person has. She works closely with clinical Dietitians to determine individualized nutrient requirements and takes the necessary measures to ensure these requirements are provided and tolerated by each patient. Dr. Bartell not only understands the complexity of providing nutrition but also understands the importance and large influence it has on maintaining the health of patients with Alzheimer’s. She is an active member of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, Society of Critical Care Medicine, and Texas Society of Health-System Pharmacists.
